The Indian Parliament recently announced the constitution of its department-related standing committees, which oversee the functioning of various Union ministries. Bhartruhari Mahtab from the BJP is appointed to chair the Standing Committee on Finance. Radha Mohan Singh will lead the Defence Committee. Congress’ Shashi Tharoor shall head the Committee on External Affairs. Radha Mohan Das Agarwal from the BJP will chair the Home Affairs Committee. Other notable appointments include Anurag Thakur, who will chair the Coal, Mines, and Steel panel, and Digvijay Singh from Congress, who will lead the Committee on Education. Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, will be part of the Defence Committee. Notably, Sonia Gandhi’s name does not appear on any committee.

BJP allies and partners, including the TDP, Janata Dal (United), Shiv Sena, and the NCP, have also been given significant roles. Sunil Tatkare of the NCP will head the Petroleum and Natural Gas panel. At the same time, Shiv Sena’s Shrirang Appa Barne will lead the Energy Committee. The TDP’s Magunta Sreenivasulu Reddy will chair the Housing and Urban Affairs Committee. JD (U)’s Sanjay Jha will lead the Committee on Transport, Tourism, and Culture. The standing committees, acting as “mini parliaments,” are tasked with scrutinizing Union ministries’ budgetary allocations, bills, and policies. These committees play a crucial role in the legislative process by providing recommendations and monitoring government activities.
