BCCI Makes Ajit Agarkar the Chairman of Selectors
Former Indian pacer Ajit Agarkar has been selected as Team India’s new Chairman of Selectors in a major decision by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). This decision comes just months before the start of the ODI World Cup, which will be played in India itself. Agarkar’s predecessor Chetan Sharma was sacked following India’s big defeat in the World Test Championship final that took place in England. Agarkar’s appointment is expected to have a major impact on the world cup, but the former cricketer had certain reservations in taking up the job, as per Cricbuzz.
Ajit Agarkar was primarily concerned about the restrictions he may face despite being in this important position and that he earned similar fees as a commentator and domestic cricket coach. He had to be extensively persuaded to take up the role, and the fee for Chairman of Selectors was hiked to Rs. 3 crores from Rs. 1 crore annually in this regard. While Agarkar’s work in the selection committee of Mumbai Cricket has been widely praised, it will be a major challenge for him to make the right selection in the squad just a few months before the World Cup begins.
