Aam Aadmi Party leader Atishi has staked her claim to form the new Delhi government after Arvind Kejriwal resigned as chief minister on September 17. Atishi, chosen as Kejriwal’s successor, vowed to protect the interests of Delhi’s people. “We have staked claim to form a new government. I will protect the interests of Delhi people,” she said. Kejriwal submitted his resignation to Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena two days after announcing his decision to quit. This move comes after Kejriwal was released on bail from Tihar Jail on September 13 in connection with the excise policy graft case. He stated that he would not resume his duties as chief minister until the people of Delhi gave him a “certificate of honesty.” Atishi alleged that central probing agencies falsely implicated and targeted Kejriwal.
She cited the Supreme Court’s harsh remarks against the Centre and its probe agencies, calling them a “caged parrot.” Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva questioned the need for a two-day delay, suggesting that Kejriwal dissolve the cabinet and call for elections immediately. BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi labeled the timing as “ridiculous,” urging Kejriwal to resign promptly and recommend the dissolution of the Assembly if he’s genuine about his intentions. Congress Delhi chief Devender Yadav dismissed the delay as a “political drama,” advocating for a new Chief Minister to be appointed promptly. Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva questioned the need for the two-day delay, while Congress Delhi chief Devender Yadav called it a “political drama.” With Atishi at the helm, the AAP claims to continue its work for the people of Delhi.
