Assam Government’s Move to Scrap Namaz Break Sparks Controversy

The Assam government’s decision to scrap the namaz break for Muslim MLAs has sparked controversy and criticism from key NDA allies, Janata Dal-United (JDU) and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP)

The move, supported by Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, challenges a decades-old tradition dating back to 1937. JDU leader Neeraj Kumar strongly disapproved of the decision, questioning Sarma’s priorities and accusing him of undermining religious practices. Kumar argued that the decision goes against the core principles of the Constitution, which protects every religious belief. He also warned that targeting Friday breaks during Ramzan could set a precedent for banning Hindu traditions. K C Tyagi, a senior leader of the Janata Dal-United (JDU), shared similar views, pointing out that the Preamble to the Indian Constitution guarantees the fundamental rights of citizens, including the freedom of thought, expression, belief, faith, and worship.

He urged the government not to harm the spirit of the Constitution or the religious sentiments of citizens. Raju Tiwari, President of the Lok Janshakti Party’s Delhi unit, also voiced his concerns, emphasizing that the right to freely practice one’s religion is a fundamental freedom that must be protected and respected. However, Sarma defended the decision, asserting that it was made through a consensus among Hindu and Muslim legislators in the assembly’s Rule Committee. He noted that the decision was unanimous and aimed at increasing productivity during assembly sessions. This controversy follows other instances where Bihar-based NDA allies expressed discontent with the government’s actions, highlighting growing tensions within the coalition.
