Asian children have the least access to mental health treatment
While the overall life expectancy of Asian children and their access to healthcare has significantly gone up, they are still far from receiving mental health treatment. According to a new report published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, US, Asian children are least likely to receive access to healthcare. The report states that only 15% of children between the ages of 5 to 17 had received mental health treatment. The case is even worse for Hispanic kids, as only 4.4% of children from that age group had received any mental health therapy.
Mental health continues to remain a taboo in India and other Asian countries, where a dominant majority of people have not received or refuse to seek out psychiatric or therapeutic help altogether. While modern health centres have dedicated wings for mental health, most mid and low-tier hospitals do not have any available assistance for mental health. This condition has distinctively worsened due to the Covid-19 pandemic, not just because of the traumatic stress people have experienced during lockdowns but also because of the great burden it created on hospitals, pharmaceuticals and other health centres.
