Ashes 2023: Aussies put England on the backfoot on Day 3
The first test of Ashes 2023 has been packed with bouts of entertainment as both sides aim to get ahead early in the series by getting a win. England had made a bold decision on Day 1 by declaring a little earlier than expected, and Australia made the best of it by matching their score in their first innings. However, their real momentum came towards the end of Day 3 when they managed to dismiss both their rival openers within the first ten overs of England’s second innings.
Australian skipper Pat Cummins struck early by getting Ben Duckett out by getting the edge, which carried straight to Cameron Green in the slips. Quickie Scott Boland dismissed Duckett’s opening partner in the very next over by also getting his edge, which was safely caught by wicketkeeper Alex Carey. Australia now have another two days to get the remaining English batsmen out to win the first test of Ashes 2023. England’s decision to declare in the first innings may have been a strategic mistake, which will push them to revisit their game plan. As of now, the only way England can save themselves is if their middle-order batsmen create big partnerships and individual scores.
