Amid weather transitions in Mumbai, dusty storms causes billboard in Ghatkopar to collapse crushing lives
A tragic incident unfolded in Mumbai as a massive billboard collapsed onto a petrol station during a dust storm, claiming 14 lives and injuring over 60 individuals. Situated opposite the fuel station in Ghatkopar, the structure crashed into the heart of the refueling facility, causing widespread devastation. Authorities are investigating whether the billboard had proper authorization for installation. Eyewitnesses described the chaotic scene as vehicles and people were trapped beneath the fallen structure. Rescue efforts by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are underway to locate survivors.
In response to the disaster, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde assured priority to rescue operations and announced financial assistance for the victims’ families. Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis ordered an inquiry into the incident. The dust storm, unexpected by many, disrupted transportation, damaged infrastructure, and caused power outages across Mumbai. Flight operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport were temporarily suspended due to low visibility and gusty winds. Additionally, the metro and suburban train services were affected by the adverse weather conditions, leading to further challenges for commuters. Despite bringing relief from the heat, the unseasonal rain aggravated the situation with power outages and uprooted trees in various parts of the city and its satellite towns.
