Amazon India lays off 500 employees

Companies around the world have been announcing mass layoffs that have triggered a growing concern for job security, and American tech giant Amazon appears to have joined this list as well. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy recently announced that a total of 9000 jobs would be discontinued globally, and as per Money Control, 500 employees in India will be laid off during this process. These cuts have taken place across departments such as Human Resources and Amazon Web Services, according to the report. While there has been no official announcement by Amazon’s India wing just yet, these job cuts are due soon owing to the global economic slowdown.

Their e-commerce initiative in India, Amazon Digital Kendra, is also being shut down as a part of certain restructuring decisions. While this project is likely to be relaunched with even more planning, it has been halted until further notice. Economic projections around the world have indicated that the global economy is rapidly heading toward recession, and these layoffs are a direct result of this slowdown. While India will largely remain safe from its impact, large-scale job cuts like these present a recurring problem for the country.
