After US, UK Considering Tech Investments Ban on China?
The United States had recently announced its decision to curb its tech investments in China, which invited negative remarks from the Chinese Embassy in the country as well as the Foreign Affairs Ministry. However, that has not stopped the United Kingdom government from contemplating to make a similar decision for their own country, as per Reuters. A spokesperson of PM Rishi Sunak’s government said, “The UK will consider these new measures closely as we continue to assess potential national security risks attached to some investments.” While they have not yet confirmed that a similar decision will be executed by them, a discussion on this matter has been triggered within the government.
The Biden administration signed the executive order banning crucial tech investments in China, citing their national security concerns. Their government has stated that China uses its technology to store data and spy on their country. India has taken several steps to block Chinese investments in all fields, but especially in technology. Quite recently, the Indian government refused to allow BYD, China’s electric vehicle company, to set up a manufacturing plant in India. Prior to that, India had banned several Chinese apps after the 2020 Galwan clash. The UK government’s decision on this issue is now awaited.
