After-Effects of Kejriwal’s Arrest: No Support was seen Within the Party

The quiet stance of five out of seven Rajya Sabha MPs from Punjab, following the arrest of party leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on March 21 in the Delhi liquor “scandal,” has puzzled the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leadership. These MPs have neither condemned Kejriwal’s arrest nor publicly demonstrated their support for the party during this crisis. Multiple affluenced individuals, associated with the party, remained silent on Kejriwal’s arrest. They have also refrained from updating their social media profile pictures in solidarity with the party’s stance. AAP members have been changing their profile pictures to show a jailed Kejriwal with the slogan “Modi ka sabse bada dar, Kejriwal” since his arrest.

According to a Punjab minister in the AAP government cited by The Tribune, none of the MPs has released a statement criticizing the BJP or expressing support for the party’s national convener. Balbir Singh Seechewal reportedly clarified his stance to the party leadership before accepting the Rajya Sabha membership, stating he would not engage in the party’s political activities. Similarly, Vikramjit Sahney, a businessman and philanthropist, has emphasized in a social media post that he is “non-political” and focused on addressing issues related to Sikhs, youth, Punjab, and Punjabiyat, irrespective of political affiliations.
