Afghanistan secured a historic spot in their first-ever T20 World Cup semi-final by defeating Bangladesh by eight runs in a rain-affected match at the Arnos Vale Stadium in St Vincent. Afghan’s victory also resulted in Australia’s elimination from the tournament. Despite posting a modest total of 115 for five on a challenging pitch, Afghanistan, led by captain Rashid Khan, defended their score effectively. Rashid took four wickets for 23 runs, navigating through three rain interruptions, a slippery ball, and a revised target of 114 off 19 overs. Bangladesh, who needed a win to keep their semi-final hopes alive, were bowled out for 105 in 17.5 overs.
Opener Litton Das, with an unbeaten 54, kept Bangladesh in contention, which would have helped Australia advance to the semi-finals on net run-rate. However, Afghan pacer Naveen ul Haq took the crucial last two wickets of Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman in consecutive deliveries during the penultimate over, sparking celebrations among the Afghan team. Earlier in the day, India’s victory over Australia confirmed their place in the second semi-final against England. Afghanistan’s win secured their second spot in the group, leading them to face South Africa in the first semi-final in Trinidad. This result knocked both Australia and Bangladesh out of the tournament.
