On Sunday, Afghanistan achieved a significant milestone in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup by defeating former world champions Australia in their Super Eight match at the Arnos Vale Ground in Kingstown. This victory, their first against Australia in six international encounters, showcased Afghanistan’s potential and resilience. Defending a total of 148 for six, Afghanistan bowled out Australia for just 127. Gulbadin Naib’s four-wicket haul overshadowed Pat Cummins’s hat-trick, leading to Australia’s collapse. After the match, the Afghan team, including Rashid Khan, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Mohammad Nabi, and coach Jonathan Trott, celebrated by dancing to ‘Champion.’ Rashid Khan expressed his elation, highlighting the win’s significance for the team and the nation. “It’s a massive win for us as a team and as a nation. Great feeling. It’s something we missed in the last two years. Really happy with the win and super proud of the guys,” he said.
He also praised Gulbadin Naib’s crucial performance and Nabi’s early breakthrough, which set the tone for the match. Afghanistan’s innings began with a strong start from Rahmanullah Gurbaz (60) and Ibrahim Zadran (51), leading to a total of 148/6. Australia’s Pat Cummins took a hat-trick, claiming the wickets of Rashid Khan, Karim Janat, and Gulbadin Naib, while Adam Zampa and Marcus Stoinis contributed with two and one wicket, respectively. In response, apart from Glenn Maxwell’s 59, no Australian batter could make a significant impact, leading to their downfall at 127 runs in 19.2 overs. Afghanistan’s bowling was exceptional, with Gulbadin Naib taking four wickets, Naveen-ul-Haq three, and Azmatullah Omarzai, Mohammad Nabi, and Rashid Khan each securing one wicket.
