Ilia Topuria’s Meteoric Rise: Featherweight Champion’s Path to Glory and Controversy

Ilia Topuria is rapidly emerging as one of the most formidable names in the UFC, and he’s showing no signs of slowing down

Currently the reigning featherweight champion, Topuria recently retained his title by defeating Max Holloway with a third-round knockout at UFC 308 in Abu Dhabi. The victory marked a historic moment, as Holloway had never been knocked out before, having previously claimed an impressive KO victory over Justin Gaethje at UFC 300. Topuria had promised a knockout and delivered, solidifying his reputation as a powerful and determined fighter. Now, his sights are set on a potential rematch with former champion Alexander Volkanovski, whom he defeated earlier at UFC 298 to claim the featherweight gold. Topuria’s rise hasn’t been limited to the Octagon alone. A recent video shared on social media showed former Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo labeling Topuria as a fighter who “speaks too much.”

The clip, featuring UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou seated next to Ronaldo, didn’t sit well with Topuria, a proud Real Madrid fan himself. Responding to Ronaldo’s comment, Topuria remarked, “I didn’t expect someone like you to confuse confidence with arrogance. We reflect our reality onto others.” He added a respectful closing, wishing Ronaldo success in the remainder of his career. Topuria’s growing presence has captured attention across the UFC, including from heavyweight fighter Derrick Lewis. In a recent interview, Lewis expressed relief that Ilia isn’t in his division, saying, “They (featherweight fighters) have to deal with that guy. I’m glad I don’t.” Topuria’s talent and confidence are undeniably making waves, both within and beyond the sport.
