Sanjay Leela Bhansali recently addressed rumors surrounding his highly anticipated film Love and War, which stars Alia Bhatt, Ranbir Kapoor, and Vicky Kaushal. Contrary to speculation, Bhansali confirmed in an interview with Anupama Chopra that Love and War is not a remake of Raj Kapoor’s iconic film Sangam. Although Bhansali holds Sangam in high regard and has drawn inspiration from it for his earlier work, such as Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, he emphasized that his new project is entirely original. Bhansali shared his admiration for legendary actors like Vyjayanthimala, calling her the most beautiful actress on the Indian screen. He fondly remembered how Raj Kapoor had an exceptional ability to present stars like Zeenat Aman and Padmini Kolhapure in an extraordinary light. Bhansali’s respect for Kapoor is profound, and he expressed a deep wish to have met the legendary filmmaker, showing his appreciation for the industry’s legends and his desire to continue their legacy.
However, when it comes to remakes, Bhansali prefers not to recreate classics, as he believes in preserving their unique essence. He made a similar comparison between his series Heeramandi and Kamal Amrohi’s Paakezah, stating that while he admires these classics, his films are not remakes of such masterpieces. Discussing Love and War, Bhansali noted that the film is a significant departure from his usual period dramas, highlighting that it will be set in contemporary times with a distinctive musical style. He expressed his excitement about reuniting with Ranbir Kapoor after nearly two decades. He shared his admiration for the lead trio. Bhansali concluded by stressing his commitment to delivering a film that meets the high standards expected of him, a promise that he believes will ensure Love and War will be a special cinematic experience.
