Retired IPS officer Sharad Kumar to lead the BCCI’s Anti-Corruption Unit
Retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Sharad Kumar has been appointed as the new head of the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU)
IPS Officer Sharad Kumar, who previously served as the chief of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for four years, brings a wealth of experience to this critical role. His appointment, finalized during the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting on September 29, took effect on October 1. At 68, Kumar is a seasoned professional from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, who is recognized for his significant contributions to law enforcement. Sharad Kumar, a 1979 batch IPS officer from the Haryana cadre, has had a distinguished career in various high-profile roles. As the Director General of the NIA from 2013 to 2017, he led investigations into several major terror attacks, including the notorious Pathankot airbase incident. His tenure at the NIA was marked by enhancements in the agency’s capabilities and infrastructure and successful efforts to disrupt terror financing networks.
In his new role as head of the BCCI’s ACU, Kumar will be tasked with addressing corruption issues within cricket, including match-fixing and betting scandals. This appointment underscores the BCCI’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of the sport. Following his stint at the NIA, Kumar served as Vigilance Commissioner at the Central Vigilance Commission from June 2018 to April 2020, during which he also held the interim position of Central Vigilance Commissioner. His extensive experience in high-stakes environments makes him well-suited for the challenges ahead. Kumar’s contributions to law enforcement have been recognized through numerous awards, including the President’s Police Medal for Meritorious Services in 1996 and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Services in 2004. His leadership is expected to ensure a corruption-free environment in Indian cricket.
