Jay Shah, the 35-year-old secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has been elected unopposed as the next chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). He will assume the post in December, succeeding incumbent chairman Greg Barclay, who decided not to run for a third consecutive term. Shah expressed his humility and intent to advance cricket’s global reach and popularity, particularly with its inclusion in the LA 2028 Olympics. He emphasized the need for fresh thinking and innovation to elevate the love for cricket worldwide. Shah shall migrate from his current position by the end of this year.
Shah is currently the head of ICC’s Finance and Commercial Affairs sub-committee, a role he took over in 2022. He becomes the fifth Indian to hold the position of ICC chairman, following Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N. Srinivasan, and Shashank Manohar. Shah’s election marks a significant milestone for Indian cricket, and his leadership is expected to drive the sport forward in unprecedented ways. The ICC announcement highlighted Shah’s commitment to growing the sport, particularly its inclusion in the Olympics. His focus on innovation and fresh thinking will bring new energy to the ICC. As the youngest chairman in ICC history, Shah’s election represents a new era for global cricket governance.
