India’s creator community on YouTube has grown tremendously, with over 11,000 channels now having over a million subscribers each. This success reflects the platform’s widespread appeal in the country. According to YouTube CEO Neal Mohan, YouTube Shorts, a short-form video platform launched globally from India, has been a significant factor in this growth. Shorts was Google’s response to TikTok, which remains banned in India but still ranks one of the most popular apps globally. Shorts has garnered trillions of views in less than four years, indicating its strong traction among users. At the YouTube Brandcast event in New Delhi, Mohan emphasized how Indian creators influence global culture by producing videos inspired by local trends. He highlighted that YouTube’s popularity in India extends beyond mobile devices, as it has become the country’s most streamed service on Connected TVs.
“YouTube is number one in reach and watch time in India,” Mohan stated, noting that the platform has recently achieved a significant milestone with Shorts accumulating trillions of views. Cricket content, in particular, continues to thrive on YouTube in India, with over 50 billion views in the past year. These views include various forms of content, such as Livestream ‘watch-a-longs’ of the T20 World Cup, creators reenacting major IPL matches, and videos showcasing players’ lives off the field. Mohan also underscored the rising popularity of Indian creators, citing examples like Prajakta Koli, whose YouTube comedy led to a Netflix series and Bollywood debut, and Diljit Dosanjh, the first Punjabi artist to perform at Coachella. The growth of YouTube in India signifies the platform’s deep integration into the country’s digital culture, fostering a dynamic environment for creators and viewers alike.
