Clash of the Parties over the latest Budget revisions!

During a heated debate over the 2024 Budget in the Lok Sabha, Speaker Om Birla clashed with Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee

Since the budget developments, the confrontation began when Banerjee claimed that the House had never discussed the three controversial farm laws enacted by the Modi government in 2020, which were later repealed. Speaker Birla vehemently refuted this assertion, stating that the laws had indeed been debated in Parliament for five and a half hours. Abhishek Banerjee criticized the government’s handling of the Budget, calling it “anti-people” and accusing it of appeasing and compensating coalition partners of the ruling NDA. He argued that the Budget lacked vision and failed to provide relief to the ordinary people, neglecting the needs of 140 crore citizens. Banerjee highlighted the key pointers as failures of the government by expanding the acronym ‘BUDGET’: B for betrayal, U for unemployment, D for deprived, G for guarantees that were not fulfilled, E for eccentric decisions, and T for tragedies.

Apart from budget, he accused the NDA government of betraying various segments of society, including farmers, homemakers, and daily wage earners. The disagreement peaked when Banerjee reiterated his claim about the farm laws. Birla, firmly contesting Banerjee’s remarks, asserted, “When the Speaker speaks, he speaks right. You correct yourself.” Despite repeated disruptions from a few BJP members from West Bengal, Banerjee continued his criticism of the Modi government, labeling the Budget as devoid of vision and neglectful of the common populace. Banerjee’s critique extended to the broader political landscape, where he accused the BJP of arrogance and divisive politics. He suggested that the results of the Lok Sabha polls reflected a rejection of these attributes. This exchange underscores the ongoing political friction in the Indian Parliament as leaders debate significant national policies and the government’s performance.
