On Wednesday, a Saurya Airlines plane bound for Pokhara crashed during takeoff at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. The mishap was recorded around 11AM as the plane suffered a runway excursion during takeoff. The Mitsubishi CRJ-200ER aircraft was carrying 19 people, including two crew members and 17 technicians, heading to Pokhara for maintenance checks. According to reports, 18 passengers died in the crash. The plane caught fire upon impact, creating a significant plume of smoke, but emergency responders quickly extinguished the blaze.

The pilot was transported to a nearby hospital, though no further details about their condition have been revealed. Rescue operations by police and firefighters are ongoing. Tribhuvan International Airport, known for its challenging terrain, is on a plateau surrounded by deep gorges and valleys, making it one of the world’s riskiest airports. Nepal averages about one flight disaster a year, highlighting the ongoing challenges in aviation safety in the region.
