India boasts a Marvelous Win after 17 years of T20WC victory
This triumph marks India’s first T20 World Cup win in 17 years, a milestone likely to attract more advertising dollars
India’s T20 cricket World Cup victory will significantly boost advertising revenue. While the win brought joy to millions of fans, it was also bittersweet as legends Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirement from T20 cricket. India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, embraced teammate Hardik Pandya in celebration after their victory against South Africa in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. This triumph marks India’s first T20 World Cup win in 17 years, a milestone likely to attract more advertising dollars.
According to the Mint newspaper, Disney Star, this season’s official media rights holder, anticipated earning up to 180 billion rupees ($2.2 billion) in advertising revenue. The fast-paced T20 format combines US-style marketing with Bollywood’s glamour, lasting about three hours. Earlier in the tournament, a 10-second ad slot during the India-Pakistan match was expected to fetch around 2 million rupees on average. For comparison, a 30-second Super Bowl ad costs about $6.5 million, and advertising during the 2022 football World Cup in the UK was priced at approximately £400,000 ($511,000) for the same duration, Bloomberg reported.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the final as “historic” in a post on X, reflecting on the dramatic, acrobatic catches that turned the game’s tide in its closing moments. The victory crowned a remarkable tournament and marked the end of an era for Sharma and Kohli. “This was my last T20 World Cup, and this is exactly what we wanted to achieve,” 35-year-old Kohli said after winning the Player of The Match award, as the Press Trust of India reported. “This is an amazing game,” he added.
