BJP Lauding the Saffronization of the DoorDarshan logo; Congress has something else to say

The alteration of Doordarshan News’ logo from red to orange has ignited a political dispute, with the opposition labelling it as “unethical” and “grossly illegal.” Last week, the government-owned broadcaster Prasar Bharati revealed the new appearance of DD News, now adorned with a saffron hue, commonly associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Sangh Parivar.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee criticized the change, denouncing it as “saffronization” and accusing it of reflecting a pro-BJP bias. In response, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur questioned Banerjee’s affinity for the colour “saffron.”

Banerjee also raised concerns about the Election Commission of India’s approval of what she described as a “blatant, pro-Saffron violation of the Model Code of Conduct” during elections.

Contrarily, the BJP hailed the alteration as a “homecoming,” asserting that the saffron logo was initially introduced in 1982. BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya highlighted this historical context, stating that the saffron colour was present during the launch of colour TV in India.

Former Prasar Bharati CEO Jawhar Sircar expressed concern over what he perceived as the “saffronization” of Doordarshan, likening it to a merging of party identity with state affairs. However, Prasar Bharati CEO Gaurav Dwivedi dismissed the criticisms, citing the earlier adoption of a similar colour scheme by DD India ahead of the G20 summit.
