Wrestlers’ Protests: Home Minister Amit Shah meets top wrestlers
After a long phase of the ongoing wrestlers’ protests, Home Minister Amit Shah met wrestling champions Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia on June 3, as per Republic. They put their concerns and objections in front of Shah and reportedly urged for an early chargesheet to be filed against Wrestling Federation of India President and BJP MLA Brij Bhushan Singh, who has been accused of sexual harassment against wrestlers. Shah responded by saying that they will ensure an impartial investigation into this matter and let the law take its course.
Home Minister Amit Shah had remained largely uninvolved in this matter earlier but likely decided to meet the wrestlers after several political sides expressed solidarity with them. Quite recently, farmers’ protest leader Rakesh Tikait gave the government an ultimatum till June 9 to resolve this issue with talks. He said, “We will hold panchayats across the country. Wrestlers have said that we had given you five days’ time.” Two FIRs have been filed against Brij Bhushan for demanding sexual favours and molesting wrestlers on multiple occasions. Though he has unequivocally denied these allegations, the investigation continues to take place under the supervision of the courts.
