Health Benefits of Blueberries for Brain and Memory
There are several health benefits of blueberries that often get overlooked, but perhaps the most important benefit of this fruit is improving brain health. It is not a commonly known fact that blueberries positively impact a person’s memory which is visible over a certain period of time Dr. Karishma Jethmalani, a Neuropsychologist, Rehabilitation and Sports medicine at H.N. Reliance Hospital, explains, “One fascinating aspect of blueberries is their potential to slow down the natural ageing process of the brain. Anthocyanins, present not only in blueberries but also in red, purple, and blue fruits and vegetables, belong to a group of antioxidants known as polyphenols.”
However, she explains that such health benefits of blueberries are also found in other food items. “While blueberries are a noteworthy source of antioxidants, there are other dietary options that can also provide these beneficial compounds. The Mediterranean diet, for instance, is rich in antioxidants and has been associated with potential protective effects against neurodegenerative disorders,” she says in a conversation with TOI. Having said that, the health benefits of blueberries that impact the brain is rarely found in other fruits.
