Pakistan Supreme Court backs Imran Khan; Shehbaaz Sharif govt slams decision

The arrest of former Pakistan PM and PTI leader Imran Khan has spread wildfire across the country as protesters have resorted to violence. Heavy security has been deployed to quell the acts of riot and arson, which have been reported in large numbers. Khan was taken into custody by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on charges of corruption in the Tosha Khana case. However, Pakistan Supreme Court has ordered them to stop all proceedings in this case and called his arrest “illegal”, as per ANI.

Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has slammed this decision by saying that the courts have ignored the attacks on Pakistani military and government properties. Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah has gone one step further and declared that Imran Khan would be arrested again. Imran Khan has been accused of corruption during his tenure as the Prime Minister, but the former cricketer and PM has vehemently denied these claims. He and his party members have been actively vocal against Pakistani Army’s interference in politics and have been calling for elections to take place as soon as possible. While he has been provided relief, security experts believe that this volatile period is far from over.
