A Gushing ride of innings which stopped at 92 off 41 balls: Rohit Sharma
Mitchell Starc eventually dismissed Rohit Sharma, but not before he scored a spectacular performance, scoring 92 runs off just 41 balls
Team India skipper Rohit Sharma launched an aggressive assault on the Australian bowlers, particularly targeting Mitchell Starc, from whom he scored 29 runs in a single over. This over included four sixes, one of which traveled 100 meters. Batting first, he displayed relentless aggression, hitting eight sixes and seven fours during his explosive innings. Despite Virat Kohli’s early dismissal, he continued to attack, especially in Starc’s second over, which set the tone for India’s innings at the Darren Sammy Stadium. His onslaught included two aerial drives over extra cover, a powerful hit to the cow corner, and a fortunate mishit that sailed over the stumps. Rohit Sharma’s dominant performance was central to his 87-run partnership with Rishabh Pant, who contributed 15 runs off 14 balls. Pant welcomed leg-spinner Adam Zampa with a six over long-on.
Another notable shot from Rohit Sharma’s innings was a six off Pat Cummins, hit down-on-one-knee over deep mid-wicket in Cummins’ opening over. He also struck a six over extra cover off Marcus Stoinis in the eighth over. Sharma’s knock was crucial, as when India’s total was 52, his contribution was already 50 runs. He became the first player to hit 200 sixes in T20 Internationals and broke Yuvraj Singh’s record for the most sixes in an innings in a T20 World Cup. Additionally, Rohit Sharma surpassed former Bangladesh skipper Mohammad Ashraful’s record for the fastest fifty by a captain in a T20 World Cup, reaching his half-century in just 19 deliveries. He scored at a strike rate of 224.39, with all but two of India’s runs coming from his bat as he reached his milestone. Although Sharma looked poised for a record century, he ultimately fell to Starc’s reintroduction, ending his innings at 92 from 41 balls. Nonetheless, his explosive performance set a strong foundation for India’s innings.
